For those of you that follow us on our main blog, you might have noticed an extra item on the right sidebar showing some of our gaming stats (or just my insane addiction to Minecraft) through a site widget called Raptr. In short,  Raptr is a way to unify your console collections and gaming habits into 1 universal platform. Achievements, trophies and many other unlockables are brought into 1 place for all to see!

Displaying your bragging rights is pretty easy and quite universal. The site can generate a variety of stats for site widgets and forum signatures. Need it as just an image or HTML or bbCode? They have you covered!

Tracking is available essentially for all game and systems but only automatically tracked for XBLA, PSN and Steam. Manual tracking is a breeze with the site or the Raptr client. You can also keep up with your friends on the go with the iPhone app too! (Raptr is looking for programmers to extend their mobile market to Android as well but can’t afford it in-house.)

Currently, there is an application for Windows but Mac and Linux users are left out in the cold. Although there are emulation layers and WINE, there is no native solution for Linux users.

Using the main site adds a bit of the social network flair as well. Games that you own (or follow, if you opt in) will show news feeds from all over the web. Playing games, tracking time and using the site scores you points towards specials as a registered user on the site too!

There are a few more options on how to display your stats, below. For how fresh this site still is, it’s amazing for connecting all of your gaming platforms and individual games. There is still lots of room for growth but it has quite a bit of functionality. Check it out, sign up and friend us on GameBlips!

Dear Esther

So I picked up Dear Esther during the Steam summer sale for $2.49 or something like that and I just played through it today. It only took 70 minutes to play through the whole game but it was a great experience. The game drops you off with no directions, no quest, no anything. You walk through along the many paths in a beautiful landscape, there are no enemies. The purpose appears to be to walk towards this tower with a shining red light on top. While you’re walking there is random dialogue that appears to tell a story of a car crash although I had no idea if the narration was coming from my character or someone else.

I have decided I don’t want to spoil the ending because it was VERY good and slightly unexpected but I do want to recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of games like Journey or Limbo where there are few directions and you are forced to figure things out on your own. I also think if you’re a fan of the art style of Journey and Limbo you will enjoy Dear Esther.

The screenshot attached is one I took near the end of gameplay. The game is available on Steam for Mac or PC. 🙂

I am writing this blog post for the second time because I lost the first one, which was probably too long to start with! Anyway I wanted to write a post about Ni No Kuni – Wrath of the White Witch, which is an RPG for the PS3 created by Studio Ghibli, released in Japan in late 2011 and set to release in the US in January 2013 after being pushed back a few times. The graphics in this game look amazing from the still images I have seen, I have tried to remain relatively spoiler free on this game so I can really enjoy it when it is released next year.

I am a little bit familiar with the story after listening to a gaming podcast where one of the hosts talked briefly about the Japanese import version. The story is about a young boy whose mother saved him from drowning and subsequently died. The boy’s stuffed animal comes to life and they go on an adventure together. My understanding is that the Western release will be playable in both English and Japanese.

My main reason for writing this post, however, is to discuss something amazing Namco Bandai is doing right now with pre-orders. Through August 31, 2012 you can pre-order Ni No Kuni Wizards Edition on their site for $99.99 (after taxes is about $108.00) and it comes with a 300+ page hardcover magic book that is extremely useful in gameplay. It also comes with some DLC and a plush of the boy’s stuffed animal. My understanding is that the more pre-orders they receive during this limited time offering the more that comes bundled with this edition. Check it out at this site:  Namco Bandai

I think I am going to jump on this after seeing the prices of the Zelda Skyward Sword Bundle (with golden Wii remote) skyrocket after it’s initial release. Anyone else planning on getting this?

Recent Game Pick Ups

I have been purchasing games at an alarming rate for someone technically unemployed but I thought I would share what I have been picking up recently.

As you probably know from my last post Steam just had a huge summer sale and I was all over it. The sale is over and I ended up with Limbo, Trine 2, Half Life 2 (+episode 1 and episode 2), Two Worlds II, and Dear Esther.

In addition to my recent steam purchases I have also pre-ordered That Game Company’s Journey/Flower/Flow collectors bundle. The pre-order price on Amazon is $29.96 right now, which is a deal considering the box comes with all three games and their soundtracks as well as some extra Journey perks for your PS3. Another tempting pre-order that I have been pondering over is the Rachet & Clank collection on PS3, which is also at $29.96 for pre-order on Amazon. As I write this Amazon is also featuring the collectors edition of Final Fantasy XIII-2 for $34.99, ok I had to pick it up for that price 🙂

Finally I made a trip over to Game On in Midland and picked up Kid Icarus for the 3DS, which I have been wanting for a while. I am not very far in but expect a review once I have had some time to play. I also snagged a boxed copy of Pokemon Pinball for the Gameboy Color.

As a final note anyone with a Steam account should add me so we can play some multi-player! My name on there is lekaramae 🙂

Minecraft: Xbox360 Edition

Let me introduce you to the world’s greatest time hole and my new addiction… Minecraft: Xbox360 Edition!  Now I know that this is the “inferior” version compared to the flagship product available for Windows, OSX and Linux bit let’s keep an open mind and embrace the game that is keeping me glued to my TV.  Even though the maps are more finite than the computer versions, the game is amazingly faithful in every other aspect.  Some minor tweaks and optimizations, but all in all, we are all able to be in it for the long haul.

Now Karaski has already talked at great length about her love of Minecraft already, here and much of what she had to say rings true with me and how to enjoy the game initially. I’m so enthralled with this game I have logged over 67 hours (according to my raptr profile), been in and out of the Minecraft Wiki, running the Minecraft Canary app for Android an have even dabbled in Pocket Minecraft. This game has given me odd feelings of high anxiety while my inventory is loaded up and I am trying not to kill myself in a deep, dark cavern that will turn me into something that would resemble a smooshed raisin as I fall to my death. How is any of this possible with such a rudimentary style of graphics? It’s all about how deep the game is and it’s incredible design!

Even though the game has been out since March 22 and 4J Studios has already ported over 2 updates. The most recent update has added pistons (regular and sticky), shears and skins! Even more to come on the next big update that we won’t see for quite some time as the jump will take us close to the matured PC versions.

If you have been on the fence about getting this title, hopefully this article has tipped you a little closer to the dark side! Just remember, if you are new to the game, be sure to play the tutorial level first or you won’t have a clue when you jump into your own game or a friend’s server.
